EU Must Respond in Kind if US Imposes 50 Percent Tariffs, Says Czech Foreign Minister

Prague, The Gulf Observer: Czech Foreign Minister Jan Lipavský has stated that the European Union must defend its interests and respond proportionately if the United States proceeds with its planned 50% tariffs on all EU imports from June 1. Speaking on Czech Television on Sunday, Lipavský emphasized the importance of maintaining unity within the EU on this critical issue.
“If the United States goes ahead and implements increased tariffs of 50% on all EU imports from June, Europe must defend its interests and respond in kind,” Lipavský said. He confirmed that a package of retaliatory tariffs had already been pre-negotiated and expressed support for the EU’s measured approach, aimed at avoiding a full-scale trade war.
“I am glad that the EU is responding in a level-headed and reasonable manner,” Lipavský added, highlighting the bloc’s commitment to a rational and united stance.
On Friday, U.S. President Donald Trump announced plans to impose a 50% tariff on EU imports beginning June 1, sparking concerns over escalating trade tensions between the long-standing allies.
In response, the European Union’s trade chief reiterated the bloc’s commitment to securing a fair and mutually respectful trade agreement with the United States. “We are working towards a deal based on respect, not threats,” the official said.
The situation remains fluid, with both sides weighing their options as the proposed tariff deadline approaches.
