Guinness World Record Officially Certified in Çanakkale: Historic Achievement by Mazlum Kibar

Çanakkale, The Gulf Observer: Professional diving instructor Mazlum Kibar etched his name into world sports history with his extraordinary performance in Çanakkale. With the certificate officially approved by Guinness World Records, Kibar’s record in the category of “Longest Scuba Dive in Cold Water” was formally recognized. Held in commemoration of the 111th anniversary of the March 18 Çanakkale Victory, this meaningful attempt attracted great attention as both a sporting success and a symbolic event dedicated to national memory.
A Record Attempt Worthy of the Spirit of Çanakkale
The record attempt took place at Mimoza Beach near Anzac Cove. The dive, carried out in a location of great historical significance for Türkiye, was specially planned to honor and preserve the spirit of Çanakkale.
Mazlum Kibar remained underwater continuously for 36 hours, 9 minutes, and 36 seconds in approximately 12-degree cold water at a depth of 7 meters, surpassing all previous records. This performance was regarded as a combination of physical endurance, mental discipline, and professional preparation.
Citizens and officials gathered at the site witnessed the historic moment, while the sports world closely followed the achievement.
Surpassing Previous Records
The time achieved by Mazlum Kibar exceeded the marks of two notable figures who previously held records in the same category. Norwegian diver Nils-Roar Selnes’s time of 15 hours and 10 minutes, and Turkish diver Cem Karabay’s record of 30 hours and 20 minutes, were both surpassed.
Kibar’s new record drew attention not only because of its duration, but also because it was achieved under difficult weather and water conditions. According to experts, this accomplishment represents an important benchmark in the world of diving sports.
With the presentation of the Guinness World Records certificate, Kibar’s name was officially entered into international sports archives.
Strong Support from State Institutions and the Private Sector
The record attempt was brought to life through the coordination of numerous institutions. The support of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, Ministry of Youth and Sports, Çanakkale Governorship, Turkish Land Forces Command, and related institutions ensured that the organization was conducted safely and in accordance with international standards.
The event was organized in compliance with the standards of the Turkish Underwater Sports Federation and CMAS. More than 50 personnel, including Guinness representatives, referees, medical teams, technical staff, and safety divers, took part throughout the process.
One of the main supporters of the record, Verkin Group Chairman Vedat Erkin, emphasized in his statement that this achievement was not merely an individual record, but also highlighted the importance of supporting young people in sports. Erkin stated:
“This incredible record, achieved by staying underwater for 36 hours, 9 minutes, and 36 seconds, once again demonstrates the limits of human determination and discipline. We wholeheartedly congratulate our athlete on this extraordinary success. We are proud to have stood by his side and supported him throughout this journey.
We value being part of stories that push boundaries and make the impossible possible. This record is not only an individual achievement, but also a powerful example of what determination and the right support can accomplish. We will continue to stand by our athlete in his future goals. We are ready to provide every support we can in sports; we are only one phone call away from our youth.”
Mazlum Kibar’s historic success has been etched into memory not only as a world record, but also as an inspiring example of what can be achieved through determination, discipline, and the right support.
