Indonesia Receives Positive Response from U.S. on Proposals to Strengthen Economic Ties

Jakarta, The Gulf Observer: The United States government has responded positively to Indonesia’s proposals aimed at enhancing bilateral economic relations amid the backdrop of President Donald Trump’s tariff policies, Indonesian Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto stated on Monday.

Speaking at the Presidential Palace in Jakarta following a briefing with President Prabowo Subianto, Hartarto shared details of the Indonesian delegation’s recent mission to Washington, D.C., to engage in tariff negotiations with U.S. officials.

“In principle, Indonesia’s offers, which were outlined in a letter, have been appreciated by the U.S. This is because the letter contained relatively comprehensive proposals,” the minister told reporters.

Hartarto explained that the proposals included recommendations for adjustments to both tariff and non-tariff frameworks, alongside concrete measures to promote a more balanced trade relationship between the two countries.

During the negotiations, Hartarto met with several senior U.S. officials, including Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick, Secretary of the Treasury Scott Bessent, and Trade Representative Jamieson Greer. He reiterated Indonesia’s commitment to fostering fair trade and achieving a mutually beneficial economic partnership.

“President Prabowo has emphasized the need to steer the negotiations toward win-win solutions, ensuring that both countries receive equal benefits,” Hartarto affirmed.

In a move to reinforce this commitment, President Prabowo has approved the establishment of three special task forces dedicated to advancing and accelerating the negotiation process while addressing the potential impact of tariffs on Indonesia’s domestic workforce.

Hartarto also noted that both governments had signed a non-disclosure agreement to facilitate confidential negotiations and ensure that discussions progress smoothly behind closed doors.

The Indonesian delegation was comprised of key figures, including Foreign Affairs Minister Sugiono and Finance Minister Sri Mulyani Indrawati, who joined Hartarto in advancing Indonesia’s economic interests in Washington.

Indonesia and the United States have agreed to conclude their tariff discussions within a 60-day timeframe, signaling a shared commitment to quickly reaching a balanced and constructive resolution.
