Indonesia, UK Strengthen Climate Partnership with New Environmental Cooperation Agreements

Belém, The Gulf Observer: Indonesia and the United Kingdom have reaffirmed their shared commitment to advancing strategic cooperation in sustainable development and climate change mitigation through the signing of two bilateral agreements.

The first memorandum of understanding (MoU) was signed between Indonesia’s Minister of Environment, Hanif Faisol Nurofiq, and the UK’s Secretary of State for Energy Security and Net Zero, Ed Miliband, on the sidelines of the Belém Leaders Summit in Brazil on November 7.

According to Minister Nurofiq, the MoU aims to strengthen collaboration in climate mitigation and adaptation, enhance carbon management, and promote sustainable, low-carbon growth. “It emphasizes Indonesia’s commitment to climate change mitigation and reinforces our environmental diplomacy at the global level, which we are currently pursuing,” he stated.

The minister also announced the signing of a letter of intent (LoI) on environmental cooperation between Indonesia’s Environment Ministry and The Royal Foundation of The Prince and Princess of Wales in Rio de Janeiro.

Under the LoI, both parties will develop new initiatives to engage the private and financial sectors, enhance coordination in biodiversity conservation, and strengthen cooperation in law enforcement to combat environmental crimes, including illegal wildlife trade.

Minister Nurofiq emphasized that the LoI reflects the shared determination of both nations to protect biodiversity, promote sustainable development, and address cross-border environmental challenges.

Indonesia was represented at the Belém Leaders Summit by the President’s Special Envoy for Climate and Energy, Hashim Djojohadikusumo, accompanied by Environment Minister Hanif Faisol Nurofiq and Forestry Minister Raja Juli Antoni.

Held on November 6–7, 2025, the summit served as a preparatory event ahead of the 30th UN Climate Change Conference (COP30), convening global leaders to deliberate on strategies for addressing the world’s most pressing climate issues.
