Indonesian FM Urges Strengthened Multilateralism at 12th ASEAN-US Summit
Jakarta, The Gulf Observer: Indonesian Foreign Affairs Minister Retno Marsudi called for stronger multilateralism to safeguard global peace and stability during her address at the 12th ASEAN-United States Summit in Vientiane, Laos, on Friday.
In her speech, Marsudi condemned the October 10 attack by Israeli forces on the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL), labeling it a deliberate violation of international humanitarian law and UN Security Council Resolution 1701. The strike, which injured two Indonesian peacekeepers, was described as an attack on the international symbol of peace.
“We cannot remain silent when the blue helmets, the international symbol of peace, come under direct attack,” she emphasized, denouncing the unlawful offensive. The minister urged U.S. Secretary of State Anthony Blinken to ensure that the United States, as a permanent member of the UN Security Council, takes concrete action to support UNIFIL’s critical mission in southern Lebanon.
“The ongoing violations of international law without meaningful consequences is a serious issue, undermining the credibility of the UN Security Council,” Marsudi stated, highlighting the need for accountability.
Marsudi outlined three key priorities for enhancing multilateralism within the framework of the ASEAN-US partnership. First, she emphasized efforts toward peace and stability, urging U.S. support for ASEAN’s centrality through backing the ASEAN Outlook on the Indo-Pacific and respecting the Treaty of Amity and Cooperation in Southeast Asia.
Second, the minister called for cooperation in green energy development, specifically urging the U.S. to assist ASEAN in building an ecosystem for the electric vehicle industry and achieving emission reduction goals.
Lastly, Marsudi emphasized the importance of joint efforts in digital economy development, particularly in addressing the risks posed by artificial intelligence in cybercrimes and disinformation.
In her closing remarks, Marsudi expressed Indonesia’s hope that the U.S. would continue its contributions towards peace in Palestine, urging it to reject impunity, protect civilians, and promote a comprehensive two-state solution.
“As a global power, the United States must stand on the right side by rejecting impunity and promoting peace,” she concluded.
