Iran and Russia Discuss Enhanced Cooperation on Small Modular Reactors and Nuclear Power Projects

Tehran, The Gulf Observer: Iran and Russia have engaged in high-level talks aimed at strengthening bilateral cooperation in the field of nuclear energy, with a particular focus on leveraging the potential of small modular reactors (SMRs) to advance joint development initiatives.
A Russian delegation led by Nikolai Spassky, Deputy for International Affairs of the Russian State Nuclear Corporation Rosatom, arrived in Tehran on Wednesday for discussions with Mohammad Eslami, Head of the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran (AEOI).
During the meeting, both sides reviewed progress and explored new avenues for collaboration on SMR technology and the Iran–Hormoz nuclear power project, as well as on 1,250-megawatt reactor units.
The talks emphasized the importance of accelerating ongoing projects and enhancing technical coordination between the two countries. It was noted that Rosatom CEO Alexei Likhachev is expected to visit Iran in the near future to monitor developments in the construction of Bushehr Nuclear Power Plant Units 2 and 3.
The meeting builds on recent discussions held in September, when Eslami and Likhachev reviewed prospects for expanding cooperation in the field of peaceful nuclear energy, underscoring the shared commitment of Iran and Russia to advancing safe and sustainable nuclear technologies.
