Isaac del Toro Clinches Overall Victory at Vuelta a Burgos Despite Final Stage Drama

Burgos, The Gulf Observer: Mexican cyclist Isaac del Toro secured the overall victory in the Vuelta a Burgos after finishing second on the fifth and final stage, marking his second stage race win of the 2025 season. The UAE Team Emirates-XRG rider’s triumph came after an impressive week of consistent performances, capped by a determined recovery from a flat tyre during the last stage.
The decisive day saw Del Toro suffer a puncture on the descent of the Alto de Rozavientos, temporarily losing contact with the main contenders. Assisted by his team car, the 21-year-old launched a high-speed descent to rejoin the peloton before tackling the race’s final summit finish on the Lagunas de Neila — a gruelling 6.4km climb with an average gradient of 9.1%.
Entering the stage, Léo Bisiaux of Decathlon AG2R La Mondiale held the overall lead, but attacks from Giulio Ciccone (Lidl-Trek) and Del Toro with three kilometres remaining proved decisive. While Ciccone went on to win the stage, Del Toro’s focus remained on putting enough time into Bisiaux to seize the general classification title.
The young Mexican’s efforts paid off, as Bisiaux slipped to third overall, handing Del Toro the victory and UAE Team Emirates-XRG their 70th win of the 2025 campaign. Del Toro also topped the young rider classification, further underlining his rising status in the sport.
Reflecting on the victory, Del Toro praised his teammates’ support:
“The last stage was tricky — I punctured on the last descent and had a hard chase back. I thought the race might have been getting away from me, but we stayed calm and got back in it. I feel like I’ve taken a step forward this year, physically and mentally, and I’m really enjoying my cycling. We had a great atmosphere in the team all week, and I’m very grateful for the trust they show in me.”
