Kenya on the Right Path, But Challenges Remain: Raila Odinga

Nairobi, The Gulf Observer: Former Prime Minister Raila Odinga has expressed confidence that Kenya is on the right track as it moves into the future, while acknowledging that significant challenges still need to be addressed.

Speaking at an Iftar dinner he hosted in Upper Hill, Nairobi, Raila emphasized that Kenya has made progress compared to past years but noted that there is still a long way to go.

“Let us remain united. We know the steps that we have taken, and we know where we are going. We all know where the country is supposed to be,” he stated. “We are not where we wish to be, but the country must move forward. I am sure we will get where we want to be.”

The former Prime Minister also reflected on the evolution of democracy in Kenya, describing it as a gradual process rather than an instant transformation. He likened democracy to a journey marked by progress and occasional setbacks.

“Kenya has made strides, but democracy is not like instant coffee. It is a process; two steps forward and one step backward, we are still advancing,” Raila remarked.

He underscored the importance of improving the electoral process to ensure transparency and fairness, emphasizing that the country has not yet achieved free and fair elections but remains committed to reaching that goal.

“We are not yet there. We do not conduct a free and fair election, but we will get there,” he said.

In his call for unity and collective effort, Raila urged Kenyans to make sacrifices for the betterment of the nation, stressing the importance of moving forward together without selfishness.

“We must all sacrifice. We will get where we want to be. We are sure we will get there, but we do not want selfishness. Kenya must move forward together as one,” he added.

Raila also addressed the issue of national identity cards, supporting President William Ruto’s stance on providing IDs to all citizens without discrimination. He recalled that communities in Kibera, Nairobi, had faced prolonged challenges due to being denied identity documents.

“All Kenyans should get IDs without any discrimination,” he asserted.

The Iftar dinner brought together leaders and community members, reflecting on the importance of unity and progress as the country continues its journey toward a more prosperous future.
