Kenyan Former Chief Justice David Maraga Announces 2027 Presidential Bid

Kisii, The Gulf Observer: Kenyan Former Chief Justice David Maraga has officially declared his intention to run for the presidency in the 2027 general election, signaling his readiness to initiate transformative leadership.
Speaking on Sunday in Kisii after a church service, Maraga expressed his commitment to offering himself for the top job, emphasizing that the ultimate decision rests with the electorate. Dismissing claims that he is a political project, he urged the public to make their independent judgment in due time.
“At the end of the day, it is the people who will decide. Just relax, wait, and in due course, you will make up your mind yourself whether or not I’m a state project,” Maraga stated.
He also called for the selection of credible officials to oversee the upcoming election, highlighting the need for a free and fair electoral process. “We are praying that the IEBC Selection Panel selects fit and honest people to deliver a free and fair election,” he added.
Maraga’s announcement comes amid a push by prominent Kisii leaders, led by Senator Richard Onyonka, advocating for former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiangi as the region’s preferred presidential candidate. Onyonka revealed that plans are underway to establish a regional political party to back Matiangi’s candidacy.
Despite this, Maraga has continued to gain support from younger generations, particularly Gen Z, who have endorsed his bid. He acknowledged their backing and confirmed ongoing discussions with various stakeholders regarding his candidacy.
Speaking at Rongo University in Migori County on March 27, Maraga affirmed that a final decision would be made public in due course.
“The request has been made; I’m discussing it with various stakeholders. I will make a final decision, and when the time comes, we will see whether or not we will do that,” he said.
Maraga underscored the need for aspirants to comprehend the responsibilities of elective positions, stressing that leadership should be about service. Reflecting on his tenure as Chief Justice, he asserted his capability to lead the nation, stating, “I was head of one arm of government. There is no magic about being a head of another arm of government.”
He identified corruption as Kenya’s greatest challenge, citing institutionalized graft as a major impediment to national development.
“The major problem in this country is corruption—budgeted and institutional corruption that has not been effectively addressed. As a result, the country lacks sufficient resources to tackle existing issues,” he remarked.
With his declaration, Maraga is set to join the presidential race, positioning himself as a candidate advocating for integrity, transparency, and governance reforms.
