Libya’s National Development Authority Launches Solar-Powered Irrigation Project

Al-Buwaynis, The Gulf Observer: The National Development Authority of Libya has announced the successful supply, installation, and operation of an integrated solar power system to operate pivot irrigation systems in Agricultural Project No. 87, located in Umm Al-Dalal, Al-Zighan district, within the municipality of Al-Buwaynis.
In a statement issued Friday, the Authority said the shift to solar energy was prompted by the weak electricity supply in the area. The new system now enables the irrigation of approximately 50 hectares of farmland using renewable energy.
The project includes the installation of a solar-powered system to operate two groundwater irrigation pumps—one with a capacity of 60 horsepower (HP) and another of 50 HP—in addition to an extra solar unit that supplies electricity to the pivot irrigation tower for improved efficiency and reliability.
With a total production capacity of 146.2 kilowatts (kW), the system strengthens agricultural sustainability, reduces dependence on the national power grid, and supports Libya’s national strategy to transition toward clean and renewable energy across strategic development projects.
The Director of Agricultural Projects at the National Development Authority conducted a field visit to inspect progress and review the operation of the new solar-powered irrigation system.
The Authority emphasized that the initiative marks a significant step forward in integrating renewable energy into Libya’s agricultural sector, ensuring long-term productivity, environmental sustainability, and energy efficiency in rural development.
