Malaysia-China Friendship Goes Beyond Trade, Embraces Cultural Diversity: PM Anwar Ibrahim

Kuala Lumpur, The Gulf Observer: The bond between Malaysia and China extends beyond economic ties, encompassing a shared appreciation for cultural diversity and the essence of civilisation, Malaysian Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said on Saturday.

Speaking at the Chinese New Year Global Launching event at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre, Anwar highlighted the importance of mutual respect for cultural diversity, which he discussed during a recent meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping.

“I believe this vision to respect cultural diversity and honour the true meaning of civilisation is just as vital as trade and investment,” Anwar stated. He also expressed that this spirit should be reflected as Malaysians celebrate the upcoming Chinese New Year.

The event marked a historic first, as it was held outside of China, with Malaysia chosen to lead the celebration.

Anwar underscored the inclusivity of Malaysia’s Chinese New Year festivities as a testament to the nation’s acceptance and unity. “It ensures that every Malaysian feels a sense of belonging and pride in this country,” he said.

Drawing from a Song Dynasty saying, Anwar conveyed his hopes for the bilateral relationship with China, emphasizing a shared vision of partnerships and collective goals. “We have moved beyond uncertainties to embrace a future of thriving cooperation,” he remarked.

The prime minister also noted that appreciating other cultures enhances Malaysia’s openness to global friendships and enriches its multicultural identity.

The event was attended by several dignitaries, including Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing, Chinese Vice Culture and Tourism Minister Gao Zheng, Chinese counterpart Sun Yeli, and Chinese Ambassador to Malaysia Ouyang Yujing.

The celebration reflects the enduring friendship and cultural collaboration between Malaysia and China, symbolizing their shared commitment to fostering unity and diversity.
