Myanmar's Yangon Zoological Garden Celebrates 119th Anniversary with Educational Excursions

Yangon, The Gulf Observer: The historic Yangon Zoological Garden celebrated its 119th anniversary with a lively three-day event, attracting numerous excursion groups and transforming the zoo into a bustling center of activity.

Sunshine International Preschool teacher Swe Thinzar Hlaing shared, “We chose the zoo for the excursion because children are fascinated by animals. At school, they only see animals in flashcards or books, but here, they can observe real animals. We also want them to enjoy the experience of traveling with their friends.”

She added, “It’s important for children to understand that while these are wild animals, they are not necessarily aggressive, and many of them have been tamed. I want the children to learn kindness toward animals.”

Similarly, Myanmar Miracle Education Centre principal U Thet Zaw Win emphasized the zoo’s educational value. “Visiting the zoo provides children with an opportunity to observe how animals eat, live, and behave,” he said. The trip involved 28 five-year-old students, accompanied by 10 teachers, creating an interactive learning experience.

The Yangon Zoological Garden, inaugurated in January 1906, remains a significant sanctuary for wild animals, an educational hub, and a popular relaxation spot, according to its warden Myint Tun.

Currently, the zoo houses over 1,400 animals across 135 species, including mammals, birds, and reptiles. Over 50 dedicated zookeepers work tirelessly to ensure the animals’ health and well-being.

The zoo attracts more than 1,000 visitors daily on weekdays, while weekends see over 5,000 visitors, showcasing its enduring appeal as a family-friendly destination.
