Malaysian PM Anwar Ibrahim Launches Groundbreaking Mutiara Line LRT Project in Penang
George Town, The Gulf Observer: The much-anticipated Mutiara Line Light Rail Transit (LRT) project officially commenced with a groundbreaking ceremony at Bandar Sri Pinang, officiated by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim on Saturday.
In his address, Anwar highlighted the transformative potential of the LRT Mutiara Line, describing it as a catalyst for economic growth, social prosperity, and national unity. “The project will set a new standard for infrastructure in Malaysia and underscore its potential to stimulate high-value investments, foster new industries, and bring economic benefits to Penang and the northern corridor as a whole,” he stated.
Spanning 29.5km with 21 strategically located stations, including one at Penang South Reclamation Island A (PSR-A), the LRT Mutiara Line will feature dual alignments. These alignments will connect PSR-A to Komtar and Penang Sentral, ensuring smooth and efficient transportation.
The project promises seamless travel from Penang International Airport to Penang Sentral, offering connections to ETS & Komuter services or direct travel to Komtar, the central interchange hub for future metro rail.
Scheduled to commence operations in December 2031, the project is expected to generate thousands of job opportunities, attract significant investments, and enhance Penang’s quality of life. It will also strengthen regional connectivity, support mobility, and contribute to Penang’s economic growth for years to come.
Dignitaries attending the event included Transport Minister Anthony Loke, Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow, and MRT Corp Chairman Tan Sri Bashir Ahmad Abdul Majid.
