Marcos, Anwar Discuss ASEAN Security, Economy Ahead of Summit

Manila, The Gulf Observer: President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. held a phone conversation with Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim on Friday night to discuss regional economic and security issues ahead of the 46th ASEAN Summit in Kuala Lumpur.
The leaders exchanged views on ASEAN’s current challenges, including the Myanmar crisis, regional stability, and global economic pressures. President Marcos said the discussion reflected shared concerns within the bloc and expressed his hope for further dialogue with other ASEAN leaders during the summit, set for May 26–27.
Malaysia, this year’s ASEAN chair, will host the summit. The Philippines is scheduled to assume the chairmanship in 2026, after Myanmar was barred from doing so due to ongoing political turmoil under its military junta.
Prime Minister Anwar also raised concerns over recent U.S. tariffs, noting that Malaysia’s leadership position could help shape ASEAN’s approach in global trade talks. He welcomed the temporary 90-day suspension of the tariffs, which opens room for further negotiations.
Anwar concluded by wishing the Philippines success in its upcoming May 12 midterm elections.
