Marsudi Reaffirms Indonesia’s Unwavering Support for UNRWA

New York, The Gulf Observer: Indonesian Foreign Affairs Minister Retno Marsudi has reiterated Indonesia’s unwavering support for the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) during a meeting with Commissioner-General Philippe Lazzarini. The meeting, held on the sidelines of the 79th Session of the United Nations General Assembly, focused on the escalating humanitarian crisis in Palestinian territories due to ongoing Israeli aggression.
Marsudi and Lazzarini discussed the deteriorating situation in Gaza, which has extended to the West Bank, emphasizing the critical role UNRWA plays in providing aid to Palestinian refugees. “We discussed the situation there, particularly from the humanitarian aid aspect, since UNRWA is responsible for the Palestinian refugees,” Marsudi stated.
During the meeting, Lazzarini expressed concern over the financial difficulties faced by UNRWA, exacerbated by an Israel-led smear campaign and unfounded accusations that have led some countries to suspend funding. He commended Indonesia for its steadfast commitment to justice and humanity for the Palestinian people, despite growing international pressures.
Marsudi confirmed Indonesia’s continued support, highlighting that Indonesia has tripled its contributions to UNRWA, amounting to $1.2 million this year. She also underscored Indonesia’s efforts in the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) to rally further support for Palestine, noting that many Muslim and Arab nations have reaffirmed their commitment to the Palestinian cause during recent discussions.
“Indonesia’s support for Palestine extends beyond the government’s global efforts. It is also evident in the solidarity shown by the Indonesian people,” Marsudi added, citing donations through Indonesia’s National Alms Agency (Baznas), which has provided $3.3 million in aid to Palestine since November 2023.
This meeting reinforces Indonesia’s firm stance on supporting Palestinian refugees and advocating for humanitarian solutions amidst the ongoing conflict.
