Muscat, The Gulf Observer: In a significant milestone for the Sultanate of Oman, the Ministry of Economy proudly chaired the Arab Forum for Sustainable Development 2030 on Tuesday, convened under the theme “Working for Sustainability and Peace.” The three-day event unfolded through video communication, connecting participants in the Lebanese capital, Beirut.
Organized annually by the Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA) in collaboration with the Arab League and various United Nations agencies in the region, the Arab Forum for Sustainable Development (AFSD) serves as a crucial platform for representatives from Arab governments, institutions, and bodies. It aims to foster discussions on progress, review national and regional experiences, and explore the latest developments and implementation mechanisms related to the 2030 sustainable development goals (SDGs).
Dr. Said Mohammed Al Saqri, the Minister of Economy, delivered a compelling speech emphasizing Oman’s commitment to realizing the SDGs by establishing a comprehensive scheme aligned with the national priorities and Oman Vision 2040 goals.
Highlighting Oman’s focus on social protection, Minister Al Saqri noted the nation’s priority in revising the social protection scheme, consolidating relevant programs under a single umbrella. This approach aims to enhance sustainability, effectively target the most vulnerable groups, and elevate the standards of living across all segments of society.
A noteworthy addition to this year’s agenda is the heightened emphasis on partnership with the private sector. The inaugural Arab Forum for Business Companies on Sustainable Development Goals, integrated into the AFSD, signals a significant step toward fostering collaboration between public and private entities to achieve sustainable development.
Minister Al Saqri emphasized the forum’s role in exploring regional priorities and contributions to the upcoming summit in New York scheduled for September. Government leaders will convene to discuss multilateral solutions, aiming to benefit present and future generations.
One of the highlights of the AFSD 2030 is the announcement of the winners of the Arab Digital Content Award for 2024. This prestigious award recognizes and honors outstanding Arabic digital content that supports the SDGs.
As the AFSD unfolds, it reaffirms Oman’s dedication to sustainable development, regional collaboration, and creating a better future for its citizens and the wider Arab community.
