Myanmar’s Min Aung Hlaing Visits Baikal Lake and Ulan-Ude Locomotive Plant in Russia’s Republic of Buryatia

Ulan-Ude, The Gulf Observer: A high-level Myanmar delegation led by Chairman of the State Administration Council and Prime Minister Senior General Min Aung Hlaing continued its official visit to the Russian Federation’s Republic of Buryatia with a tour of the iconic Baikal Lake and the Ulan-Ude Locomotive and Carriage Repair Plant (LVRZ) yesterday.

Accompanied by his wife, Daw Kyu Kyu Hla, and senior officials, the Senior General visited Baikal Lake along with the Head of the Republic of Buryatia, Mr. Aleksey Sambuyevich Tsydenov, and local authorities. The delegation conducted an aerial inspection of the lake by helicopter, during which Mr. Tsydenov briefed them on the lake’s unique features and ongoing conservation efforts. The Senior General raised several queries regarding environmental preservation measures.

The delegation also toured the Baikal Lake by vessel to witness its remarkable natural beauty up close. Baikal Lake, located between Russia’s Irkutsk Oblast and the Republic of Buryatia in Southern Siberia, is globally recognized as the world’s deepest freshwater lake, with a depth of 1,642 meters (5,387 feet). Estimated to be over 30 million years old, it holds UNESCO World Heritage status since 1996 and is home to around 1,000 rare plant species and approximately 2,500 animal species. Its distinctive crescent moon-like shape and pristine natural environment make it a globally significant ecological site.

Later, the Senior General and his delegation visited the Ulan-Ude Locomotive and Carriage Repair Plant (LVRZ), where they were welcomed by Mr. Zaborskikh Sergey Alexandrovich, Head of the plant, along with senior officials. The Myanmar delegation inspected the facility’s repair and maintenance operations, gaining insight into its economic role and international cooperation.

During the briefing, plant officials elaborated on locomotive repair processes, employment generation, technological upgrades, and the modernization of locomotive systems. Established in 1934, LVRZ operates under Zheldorrem-mash, a leading global company specializing in railway equipment repair and spare parts production. The plant’s primary operations include locomotive overhauls, machinery production, spare parts manufacturing, and the enhancement of repair technologies aimed at extending locomotive service life and improving performance.

Local media outlets, including Arigus, ATV, and Tivicom, extensively covered the visit. Following the tour, Senior General Min Aung Hlaing and Mr. Tsydenov addressed media queries, highlighting the growing friendship and cooperation between Myanmar and the Republic of Buryatia.

They discussed prospects for enhanced collaboration in economic development, industrial technology, education, and tourism sectors, reaffirming both sides’ commitment to strengthening bilateral ties in the years ahead.
