Oman, Algeria Discuss Expanded Cooperation in Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources

Muscat, The Gulf Observer: Omani Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources Dr. Saud bin Hamoud Al Habsi on Sunday received Eng. Yacine El-Mahdi Oualid, Minister of Agriculture, Rural Development and Fisheries of Algeria, for high-level talks aimed at strengthening bilateral cooperation across key productive sectors.
Opening the meeting at the Ministry’s headquarters, Dr. Al Habsi reaffirmed the importance of sustaining joint efforts between the Sultanate of Oman and the People’s Democratic Republic of Algeria in agriculture, fisheries, and water resource management. He praised the depth of Omani-Algerian relations and the steady, positive development they continue to witness.
Eng. Oualid expressed his deep appreciation for Oman’s achievements in the fields of agricultural development and fisheries wealth, noting the country’s remarkable progress in building resilient and innovative sectoral capabilities. He emphasized Algeria’s firm commitment to reinforcing bilateral cooperation and expanding the exchange of specialized expertise in agriculture, maritime fishing, and rural development.
As part of the proceedings, the Omani side delivered a visual presentation titled “Achievements and Milestones in the Agriculture, Fisheries, and Water Resources Sectors for 2024,” highlighting major national projects and initiatives implemented throughout the year. This was followed by a presentation on Oman’s food security strategy, delivered by Eng. Abdulaziz Al Shukaili, Director of the Investment Department, who detailed the nation’s efforts to strengthen food security infrastructure and ensure the sustainability of essential supply chains.
A joint presentation on “Omani-Algerian Cooperation Opportunities in the Agricultural Sector” was also showcased, during which experts from both delegations offered insights into promising investment avenues. These included desert soil management, precision agriculture, date palm cultivation, tropical fruit production, horticulture development, and advanced agricultural management and transformation.
The meeting concluded with an in-depth discussion on future cooperation pathways. Both sides explored practical mechanisms to advance joint initiatives, enhance coordination in research and technical programs, and contribute to achieving sustainable food security and the continued development of vital sectors in both nations.
