Oman and Jordan Issue Joint Communiqué on Strengthening Bilateral Relations

Amman, The Gulf Observer: His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tarik and King Abdullah II Ibn Al Hussein of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan have expressed their pride in the deep-rooted historical relations between the Sultanate of Oman and Jordan. They emphasized their commitment to further developing these relations and enhancing cooperation mechanisms across various fields, aiming for comprehensive integration.

This affirmation was made in a joint communiqué issued by the Sultanate of Oman and Jordan during Sultan Haitham bin Tarik’s state visit to Jordan on May 22 and 23, 2024 (corresponding to 14 and 15 Dhul-Qaadah 1445 AH). The communiqué outlined the outcomes of bilateral discussions and meetings held between the two leaders and their delegations, reflecting the strong and fraternal ties between the two nations.

During their discussions, Sultan Haitham bin Tarik congratulated King Abdullah II on the silver jubilee of his assumption of constitutional powers. Both leaders expressed their determination to strengthen bilateral relations and consolidate cooperation in various sectors, with the goal of achieving comprehensive integration.

The communiqué highlighted the positive outcomes of previous high-level interactions, including King Abdullah II’s visit to Oman in October 2022 and the 11th session of the Jordanian-Omani Joint Higher Committee held in July 2023. These engagements facilitated significant cooperation in investment, trade, industry, pharmaceuticals, mining, ICT, and real estate development.

The leaders underscored the importance of aligning their collaborative efforts with Jordan’s Economic Modernization Vision and Oman Vision 2040. They called for the implementation of agreements and memorandums of understanding to ensure tangible benefits for both nations. Additionally, they emphasized the necessity of continuous communication and exchanges between stakeholders to explore new opportunities and expand bilateral potential.

On the sidelines of the state visit, an MoU was signed between the Oman Investment Authority (OIA) and Jordan’s Social Security Corporation, represented by the Social Security Investment Fund (SSIF). This MoU aims to explore joint investment opportunities and establish new projects in Jordan.

The two monarchs also discussed enhancing joint Arab action to address current challenges and serve Arab interests. They reaffirmed the centrality of the Palestinian cause, advocating for a just solution that ends the occupation and fulfills the legitimate rights of the Palestinian people.

They welcomed the recognition of the State of Palestine by Norway, Ireland, and Spain, viewing it as a significant step toward achieving a two-state solution. They called for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza, protection of civilians, and the delivery of humanitarian aid, urging the international community to take decisive action.

The leaders also highlighted the importance of supporting the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) and rejected any attempts to separate the Gaza Strip from the West Bank and occupied East Jerusalem. They stressed preserving the historical and legal status of Islamic and Christian holy sites in Jerusalem, with Sultan Haitham bin Tarik commending King Abdullah II’s custodianship efforts.

In honor of the state visit, the two monarchs exchanged prestigious medals. Sultan Haitham bin Tarik awarded King Abdullah II the ‘Order of Al Said,’ the highest Omani medal, while King Abdullah II presented Sultan Haitham bin Tarik with the ‘Order of al-Hussein bin Ali,’ Jordan’s highest medal, symbolizing the strong and historic ties between their countries.

At the conclusion of the visit, Sultan Haitham bin Tarik expressed his deep appreciation for the warm hospitality extended by King Abdullah II and the Jordanian people to him and his delegation.
