Oman and OIC Member States Condemn Israel’s Recognition of Somaliland, Reaffirm Support for Somalia’s Sovereignty

Muscat, The Gulf Observer: The Foreign Ministers of Oman, Jordan, Egypt, Algeria, Comoros, Djibouti, The Gambia, Iran, Iraq, Kuwait, Libya, Maldives, Nigeria, Qatar, Pakistan, Palestine, Saudi Arabia, Somalia, Sudan, Türkiye, Yemen, and the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) have issued a joint statement strongly condemning Israel’s announcement on December 26, 2025, recognizing the “Somaliland” region within the Federal Republic of Somalia.
The Ministers expressed categorical rejection of Israel’s unilateral move, citing its serious repercussions on peace and security in the Horn of Africa and the Red Sea region, and its grave implications for international peace and stability. They emphasized that this action reflects Israel’s clear disregard for international law.
The statement highlights the Ministers’ position that the recognition constitutes a flagrant violation of international law and the United Nations Charter, which guarantees the sovereignty, unity, and territorial integrity of states.
They reiterated their full support for Somalia’s sovereignty and their rejection of any actions that threaten the unity, territorial integrity, and sovereignty of the Federal Republic of Somalia. The Ministers warned that recognising the independence of parts of a state’s territory sets a dangerous precedent, posing a threat to international peace and security and undermining the established principles of international law and the UN Charter.
Finally, the Ministers categorically rejected any linkage of this recognition to proposals aimed at displacing the Palestinian people, stating that such plans are rejected in both form and substance.
