‫Oman asserts before UNGA right to self-determination of Palestinian people

Muscat, The Gulf Observer: While discussing Clause (73) of the report of the International Court of Justice, the Sultanate of ‫Oman affirmed before the United Nations General Assembly that the Palestinian people have the right to self-determination and called for the necessity of peaceful settlement of disputes and not to use of force to settle it.

Second Secretary Mohammed bin Ali Al Shehhi, member of the Sultanate of Oman’s permanent delegation to the United Nations in New York, said: “The Sultanate of Oman affirms its commitment to the principles and Charter of the United Nations, which are respect for international norms and laws, non-interference in the internal affairs of countries, and settling disputes between countries by peaceful means and not to use or threat of force while supporting cooperation between countries and enhancing opportunities for dialogue.”

The Sultanate also affirmed its position in support of the Court’s contributions aimed at adhering to the provisions of international law and the established principles of the United Nations Charter, and its supportive role in strengthening the relationship between the various United Nations committees, especially the International Court of Justice as the organisation’s main judicial body.

The Sultanate of Oman supported the United Nations General Assembly Resolution No. 247/77 of December 30, 2022, in which the General Assembly, in accordance with Article 96 of the United Nations Charter, requested the International Court of Justice to issue an advisory opinion on the legal consequences arising from Israel’s continued violation of the right of the Palestinian people to self-determination.

He also questioned the long-term occupation, settlement and annexation of the Palestinian territories since 1967 by Israel, and on the impact of Israel’s policies and practices on the legal implications resulting from this status for all countries and the United Nations.

The Government of the Sultanate of Oman submitted its written submission before the International Court of Justice in Hague, pursuant to United Nations General Assembly Resolution No. 247/77 requesting the International Court of Justice to issue a fatwa on the consequences of Israel’s continued violations of the right of the Palestinian people to self-determination, confirming the firm position of the Sultanate of Oman supporting the right of the Palestinian people to self-determination, and the establishment of an independent Palestinian state with East Jerusalem as its capital.
