Oman Participates in 220th Session of UNESCO Executive Board in Paris
Paris, The Gulf Observer: The Sultanate of Oman is participating in the 220th session of the Executive Board of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO), taking place in Paris and running until 23 October 2024.
Oman is represented by Ambassador Amna Salim Rashid Al Balushi, Permanent Representative of the Sultanate of Oman to UNESCO. During her address to the council, Ambassador Al Balushi reaffirmed Oman’s unwavering commitment to promoting global peace, security, and stability. She emphasized the importance of fostering dialogue, tolerance, and respect for human rights as fundamental pillars for achieving lasting peace.
In her remarks, Al Balushi called on UNESCO to strengthen its programmes that promote intercultural dialogue and combat hate, urging the organisation to continue its efforts in fostering understanding among different cultures and communities.
Addressing the budgetary framework for UNESCO’s programme from 2026 to 2029, Ambassador Al Balushi highlighted the importance of supporting field offices to ensure they can effectively respond to the diverse needs of member states. She underscored the critical role education plays in Oman and expressed support for UNESCO’s initiatives in addressing climate change through the introduction of green education and technical training.
The ambassador further stressed the need for increased investments in key areas within UNESCO’s mandate, particularly in the preservation of cultural heritage and the promotion of innovative industries. She also emphasized the importance of financial sustainability and effective risk management to enhance the organisation’s overall efficiency and impact.
The 220th session of the UNESCO Executive Board brings together representatives from 58 member states, including Oman, whose membership on the board extends until 2027. The session will address a range of global issues, including education, cultural preservation, and sustainable development.
