Pakistan and Iran Pledge Enhanced Cooperation Against Terrorism and Economic Expansion

Islamabad, The Gulf Observer: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif of Pakistan and Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi affirmed their commitment on Monday to combat terrorism through strengthened efforts and bilateral cooperation, during President Raisi’s official visit to Islamabad.

President Raisi’s visit, closely monitored by the international community amid tensions between Tehran and Israel, underscores the significance of diplomatic engagement between Pakistan and Iran.

In a joint press conference, the two leaders announced their intention to increase bilateral trade volume to $10 billion, with President Raisi deeming the current trade level “not acceptable.”

“We are committed to strengthening relations at the highest levels. The economic and trade volume between Iran and Pakistan is not acceptable. We have decided, as a first step, to increase the trade volume between our two countries to $10 billion,” stated President Raisi.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif echoed the sentiment, emphasizing the need to bolster bilateral ties despite challenges faced by both nations. He expressed optimism about the potential for prosperity in border areas through increased trade.

Discussions during the visit centered on enhancing mutual bonds through collaboration in trade, communications, and resolving regional challenges through dialogue. Prime Minister Shehbaz commended Iran’s stance on the humanitarian situation in Gaza and urged for an immediate cessation of hostilities.

President Raisi’s arrival was marked by a ceremonial reception at the Nur Khan Airbase, followed by a guard of honor at the Prime Minister’s House. Anthems of both countries resonated on the occasion as the leaders discussed matters of mutual interest.

Welcoming President Raisi to Pakistan, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif noted the significance of his visit as the first by a foreign leader after Pakistan’s general elections on February 8.

In a symbolic gesture on Earth Day, President Raisi and Prime Minister Shehbaz planted a sapling, emphasizing environmental conservation and cooperation between the two nations.

The visit also includes a signing ceremony for memorandums of understanding (MoUs) across various fields, as well as delegation-level talks aimed at further enhancing bilateral cooperation.
