Palestinian Envoy Urges UN Security Council to Sanction Israel Amid Ongoing Gaza Conflict
New York, The Gulf Observer: Palestinian envoy to the United Nations, Riyad Mansour, has called on the UN Security Council to impose sanctions on Israel in response to its ongoing military actions in Gaza. Mansour made this urgent plea during a Security Council session convened after a deadly Israeli airstrike on a school sheltering displaced Palestinians.
During an urgent session of the UN Security Council, requested by Algeria, Riyad Mansour, Palestine’s envoy to the UN, issued a strong appeal for immediate action against Israel amid what he described as “carnage” against civilians in Gaza. The session was called in response to an Israeli airstrike that hit a school serving as a refuge for displaced Palestinians, resulting in numerous casualties.
Mansour criticized the Security Council for what he perceives as its ineffectiveness in curbing Israel’s actions. “Israel continues taking human lives and every action possible to spread wildfires across the Middle East as we sit here on the 75th anniversary of the Geneva Conventions,” Mansour stated. He emphasized that Israel remains indifferent to international condemnations and resolutions, as he directly addressed the Council and the Israeli envoy to the UN, Gilad Erdan.
In his speech, Mansour urged the Security Council to “wake up” and abandon the notion that Israel can be reasoned with to cease its military actions against Palestinians. He criticized the Council for its inaction, saying, “Stop imagining that you can reason with the Israeli government so it stops killing civilians by thousands, imposing famine, torturing prisoners, colonizing and annexing our land, all while you appeal to them, call on them, demand them to stop.”
Mansour called on the Council members to fulfill their responsibilities by taking concrete actions, including imposing sanctions on Israeli officials responsible for what he described as war crimes. “When will the Israeli government be held accountable for its actions?” he demanded, urging the international community to enforce its decisions and uphold international law.
Mansour’s appeal highlights the deepening frustration within the Palestinian leadership over the international community’s response to the ongoing conflict in Gaza. His call for sanctions reflects a growing sense of urgency and a demand for accountability as the situation in Gaza continues to escalate.
