Philippines Eyes Historic Bid to Host 2033 World Games

Chengdu, The Gulf Observer: The Philippines could make history as the first country in Southeast Asia to host the prestigious World Games, following discussions between top Philippine sports officials and the International World Games Association (IWGA).

IWGA president José Perurena López, alongside senior officials including CEO Joachim Gossow, deputy CEO Guillaume Felli, and vice president Tom Dielen, met with Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) Chairman Patrick Gregorio and Team Philippines chef de mission Stephen Arapoc at the Intercontinental Century City Hotel on Saturday.

“The World Games is all about bringing together athletes and communities. One important aspect in hosting is people’s involvement. You don’t need new facilities — we prefer a host that unites its people and delivers an unforgettable tournament,” López said.

Gregorio expressed confidence in the Philippines’ ability to host the multi-sport event, which features non-Olympic disciplines.
“What we can offer is a game with a heartbeat. We can do this for the Philippines. Imagine welcoming 110 countries and showing the warmth of Filipino hospitality,” he stated, noting that existing facilities in Manila, Clark (Pampanga), and Baguio City can meet the requirements for thousands of athletes, officials, and guests.

Bidding for the 2033 edition remains open until 2026, with IWGA set to announce the host the same year. Germany’s Karlsruhe City is already preparing for the 2029 World Games, expected to feature 5,000 athletes in 34 sports, some showcasing indigenous games of the host country.
