PM Shehbaz Sharif Stresses Protection of Minority Rights as Key to National Prosperity

Islamabad, The Gulf Observer: Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif emphasized the integral role of protecting the rights of minorities, including the Christian community, in achieving Pakistan’s development and prosperity. He made these remarks on Wednesday during a Christmas celebration event at the Prime Minister’s House, where he extended heartfelt greetings to Christians in Pakistan and across the globe.

Addressing the gathering, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif called for unity and collective efforts for the betterment of humanity, noting the significant mention of Prophet Jesus Christ (PBUH) and Hazrat Maryam (PBUH) in the Holy Quran. Highlighting the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Palestine, he urged Christians and Muslims worldwide to unite against violence and uphold the peace mission of Jesus Christ in the holy land.

“The birthplace of Prophet Jesus Christ is tainted with bloodshed, and thousands of Palestinians, including children, youth, elderly, and women, have been killed. Together, we must stop this bloodbath and advocate for peace,” the prime minister stated.

Shehbaz Sharif acknowledged the contributions of the Christian community to Pakistan’s independence and progress, particularly in the fields of education, defense, and national service. He paid tribute to notable figures such as Cecil Chaudhary and Justice Cornelius, recognizing their indelible legacy.

Reflecting on his personal connection, the prime minister shared that both he and his elder brother, former Prime Minister Mian Muhammad Nawaz Sharif, were graduates of missionary schools, where Christian teachers played a pivotal role in their upbringing and character development.

The prime minister underscored the importance of fostering unity, interfaith harmony, and tolerance to ensure that minorities feel respected and integral to the nation. “Pakistan belongs to all. Today is a day of dual celebration as we mark the birthday of both Jesus Christ and Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah, who emphasized the protection and promotion of minority rights,” he said.

Quoting Quaid-e-Azam’s vision, he reiterated the government’s commitment to safeguarding the rights, security, and prosperity of minority communities. “Your equal development and progress are central to our fundamental agenda. I assure you of my personal commitment to upholding your rights,” Shehbaz Sharif added.

The event also featured remarks from Minister for Information and Broadcasting Attaullah Tarar, who highlighted the invaluable contributions of the Christian community in Pakistan’s independence and nation-building. Tarar praised the prime minister’s initiatives, such as scholarships and stipends for Christian students during his tenure as chief minister of Punjab, as examples of inclusive governance.

He also recognized the achievements of Christian individuals, including Brigadier Helen Merry Roberts, Pakistan’s first female Christian army officer, and the Sohail sisters, who have won 22 medals in various sports.

The celebration concluded with members of the Christian community, federal ministers, and parliamentarians joining the prime minister for a cake-cutting ceremony, followed by a group photo with choir singers who performed at the event.
