President Ruto Defends Mt Kenya Development Tour, Dismisses Political Motives

Chuka, The Gulf Observer: President William Ruto has strongly defended his ongoing tour of the Mt Kenya region, clarifying that the week-long visit is focused solely on inspecting government development projects and not political campaigning.

Speaking in Chuka, Tharaka Nithi County, the President dismissed criticism from some quarters suggesting the visit was politically motivated. He emphasized that his agenda is development-oriented and called on critics to focus on their responsibilities instead of politicizing his work.

“There are some saying I should not come here to Chuka, that I should stay in the office until 2027. Have we discussed politics here? Haven’t we talked about development?” the President asked residents, who responded with applause.

President Ruto noted that while some Kenyans criticize his absence from public view when he stays in office, others complain when he conducts field tours. “But since you, my bosses, have asked me to come, let others find something to do,” he said.

During his visit, President Ruto officially handed over 60 newly constructed housing units for the National Police Service. He also inspected the ongoing construction of the KSh112 million Chogoria modern market, the KSh60 million Gatunga market, and an Affordable Housing project in Chuka. Additionally, he commissioned the new Tharaka University Tuition Complex.

Earlier, the President launched the Kamburu Dam Water Supply Project in Embu County, a KSh789 million initiative that includes an intake, water treatment plant, and 26km of pipeline to supply irrigation water to over 88,000 residents in Mbeere South.

Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, who accompanied the President, assured residents of the full implementation of all directives issued by the Head of State. “My role as Deputy President is to ensure the President’s instructions are followed as his principal assistant,” he affirmed.

Governor Muthomi Njuki praised the President for his development efforts in the region and urged him to ignore detractors questioning the region’s political support. He also lauded the appointment of Deputy President Gachagua, urging President Ruto to retain him through to 2032.

Chuka Igamba Ng’ombe MP Patrick Munene echoed these sentiments, pointing to the visible development projects in the area as proof of the administration’s performance. “Those claiming the President hasn’t delivered should visit Chuka and see the markets, housing units, and police residences,” he said. “And no one was paid to attend these meetings — people are here because of the real change they see in their communities.”
