Qatar’s PM Expresses Hope for Stability in the Middle East Following Gaza Ceasefire Agreement

Davos, The Gulf Observer: During his participation at the 55th session of the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Qatar, HE Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani, expressed hope that the recent Gaza ceasefire deal would mark the beginning of lasting stability in the region.

Speaking at a panel discussion titled “Diplomacy in the Midst of Chaos” on Tuesday, Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman emphasized the importance of both parties adhering to the agreement, which he views as a critical first step toward resolving the decades-long conflict.

“We hope that this ceasefire deal will represent a first step toward stability in the region and progressively move toward a permanent ceasefire that addresses the broader issues at hand,” His Excellency said. He highlighted the positive outcomes already seen, including the delivery of humanitarian aid to Gaza and the return of hostages, following 15 months of intense negotiations.

The Prime Minister stressed that the commitment of both sides to fully implement the ceasefire agreement would be crucial for ensuring positive results. He reaffirmed Qatar’s role as a guarantor and mediator, ensuring the full enforcement of the agreement’s provisions, but underscored that the success of the deal ultimately depends on the commitment of both parties involved.

Addressing the Palestinian authority’s potential role in Gaza’s reconstruction, His Excellency expressed hope that a Palestinian government would be formed to address the dire situation, noting that this was a matter for the Palestinians to decide on their own. He emphasized that no external power could impose conditions on the Palestinian people.

Looking back on the developments in the Middle East over the past year, Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman noted positive shifts, including the election of a new president in Lebanon and the end of the brutal Syrian regime. He also highlighted the significance of the Gaza ceasefire in shaping a new chapter in the region’s future.

The Prime Minister also underscored the opportunity for greater cooperation with the new U.S. administration under President Donald Trump. He praised the efforts of U.S. Middle East envoy, HE Steve Witkoff, whose partnership played a key role in the ceasefire negotiations.

“With President Trump striving to make America great again, there is also hope that the Middle East can be made great again through collaboration and leadership,” His Excellency stated.

Regarding his recent visit to Damascus, Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman expressed optimism about the promises made by Syria’s new administration regarding openness and unity among the Syrian people. He expressed hope that these efforts would help Syria overcome the challenges posed by the prolonged civil war and contribute to the broader stability of the region.

In his concluding remarks, the Prime Minister emphasized Qatar’s confidence in the Syrian people’s ability to rebuild, citing the successes of Syrian refugees who have integrated into diaspora communities across the world. He expressed belief that the Syrian people would overcome their hardships and emerge stronger in the pursuit of regional stability.
