Romania to Respect Moldova’s Sovereignty and Citizens’ Will, President Dan Says

Romania

Brussels, The Gulf Observer: Romanian President Nicuşor Dan on Friday reaffirmed Romania’s respect for the sovereignty of the Republic of Moldova, stressing that the will of Moldovan citizens will guide Bucharest’s approach to future relations between the two countries.

Speaking to reporters after attending the informal European Council meeting in Brussels, President Dan was responding to questions regarding recent remarks by Moldovan President Maia Sandu on the possibility of unification between Romania and the Republic of Moldova.

President Dan emphasized that Moldova is a sovereign state and that its sovereignty is expressed through the majority opinion of its citizens. He noted that the current priority of Moldovan society, as reflected in public opinion, is integration into the European Union, a goal that Romania fully supports.

He added that Romania shares deep cultural and historical ties with the Republic of Moldova and will continue to back the objectives chosen by its citizens. However, he underlined that any change in direction would depend on a clear majority view expressed by the Moldovan population in the future.

“If, in the medium or distant future, the majority of citizens hold a different view, we will act accordingly. For now, we respect the sovereignty expressed by the will of the citizens,” President Dan said.

President Maia Sandu recently stated that she would personally support reunification with Romania if a referendum were to be held, marking the first time she has publicly expressed such a position. However, she clarified that there is currently no majority support within Moldova for unification, citing opinion polls.

“At least according to polls, there is no majority support. We are a democratic country and we strictly follow the decision of the citizens,” Sandu said.
