Türkiye Reaffirms Non-Recognition of Crimea Annexation by Russia

Ankara, The Gulf Observer: Türkiye has reiterated its firm stance of non-recognition regarding the “illegal annexation of Crimea” by Russia in 2014, emphasizing its unwavering support for Ukraine’s territorial integrity and sovereignty. The Turkish Foreign Ministry issued a statement on Saturday, denouncing the current situation in the peninsula as a violation of international law.

In its official communication, the Turkish Foreign Ministry underscored that the circumstances surrounding Crimea represent a flagrant breach of international norms. The ministry highlighted that it has been a decade since the Russian Federation annexed the Autonomous Republic of Crimea of Ukraine through an illegitimate referendum held on March 16, 2014.

Ankara reaffirmed its commitment to closely monitoring developments in the region, particularly concerning the well-being of the Crimean Tatar Turks, a significant demographic within the peninsula. The ministry emphasized that the protection and advocacy for the rights of Crimean Tatars remain a top priority on Türkiye’s agenda.

Furthermore, Türkiye restated its refusal to acknowledge the de facto situation in Crimea, emphasizing that such a stance represents a violation of international law. The nation reiterated its unequivocal support for Ukraine’s territorial integrity and sovereignty in line with established principles of international diplomacy.

February 2024 marked a significant milestone, commemorating two years since Russia initiated its war on Ukraine and a decade since the illegal annexation of Crimea. Türkiye’s reaffirmation of its position underscores the ongoing commitment to upholding international law and promoting stability in the region amidst persisting geopolitical tensions.
