Turkmenistan Celebrates 30 Years of Permanent Neutrality

Turkmenistan marks 30 years of permanent neutrality with the inauguration of a new national monument and a major exhibition of achievements. The country highlights its active diplomatic role, cultural heritage, and commitment to peace, sustainable development, and international cooperation.
Turkmenistan celebrated a defining milestone in its modern history with the inauguration of the Monument to 30 Years of Neutrality, a striking new national symbol unveiled on the eve of the International Day of Neutrality. Rising 95 meters above the foothills of the Kopetdag mountains, the structure reflects Turkmenistan’s evolution over three decades as a nation committed to peace, dialogue, and constructive international engagement.
Designed as a trio of ascending pillars inspired by the traditional tagan, the monument weaves together the cultural fabric of the nation. Carpet motifs representing the country’s five regions highlight unity and continuity, while sculpted reliefs trace the arc of Turkmen history—from ancient civilizations to the achievements of the independent state.
The project was personally overseen by the National Leader of the Turkmen people and Chairman of the Halk Maslahaty, Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedow, who endorsed its reconstruction and ensured the monument’s modern identity. Inside, a newly opened branch of the Museum of Neutrality features immersive digital installations in Turkmen, English, and Russian, presenting archival materials and international documents that illustrate the country’s neutrality as a stabilizing force in regional and global affairs.
Today’s inauguration serves as a symbolic prelude to the international forum “Peace and Trust: Shared Goals for a Sustainable Future,” to be held on 12 December with the participation of heads of state, senior UN officials, and international delegations.
During the ceremony, high-level guests highlighted Turkmenistan’s consistent diplomatic course and its credibility as a neutral actor.
Foreign Minister Rashid Meredov, addressing attendees, emphasized that Turkmenistan’s neutrality is not a passive stance but an active policy framework that fosters inclusivity, confidence-building, and international cooperation.
He noted that the monument stands in Ashgabat, “but its message reaches far beyond our national borders,” calling it an open space for all nations that value peace, respect, and multilateral partnership.
Meredov also reiterated Turkmenistan’s commitment to global agendas—sustainable development, climate action, human rights, and cross-regional dialogue—underlining that neutrality continues to shape both domestic reforms and foreign engagement.
The philosophy behind Turkmen neutrality, he noted, aligns with the wisdom of the national poet Magtymguly Pyragy: “Brotherhood is our path, and friendship lights our day.”
The monument’s white exterior symbolizes a bright future and clarity of purpose, while its deep blue accents evoke the serenity and stability of Turkmenistan’s peaceful vision. Surrounded by panoramic platforms and museum spaces, it stands not only as an architectural accomplishment but also as a cultural and diplomatic message—affirming that peace is strongest where trust prevails.
A National Exhibition Highlights Economic Progress
Earlier today, the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Turkmenistan opened a large-scale exhibition of national achievements dedicated to the 30th anniversary of permanent neutrality.
The event gathered government officials, members of the Mejlis, diplomats, representatives of international organizations, media, and participants of the upcoming global forum.
The exhibition showcases significant advances across key sectors—including industry, energy, agriculture, construction, transport, and digital technologies. Exhibitors presented new developments, innovative solutions, and products that reflect Turkmenistan’s rapid economic modernization and long-term development strategy.
The opening of the exhibition has become one of the central events marking this historic anniversary, underscoring the country’s steadfast commitment to sustainable growth, technological progress, and expanded international cooperation.
A Confident Step Into the Future
As Turkmenistan celebrates 30 years of its permanent neutrality—a status recognized and respected worldwide—the country positions itself not only as a responsible partner but also as a driving force for dialogue in an increasingly complex world.
With its new monument, its message to the international community is clear:
Turkmenistan’s neutrality is active, dynamic, and forward-looking—rooted in national tradition, but dedicated to global peace and shared prosperity.
