Turkmenistan Reviews Caspian Sea Agenda Ahead of Environmental Summit

Ashgabat, The Gulf Observer: Turkmenistan’s Interdepartmental Commission on Caspian Sea Issues convened its 65th meeting at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on July 18 to review progress on national initiatives and preparations for the upcoming Caspian Environmental Summit scheduled for October.
During the meeting, officials presented a report outlining the implementation of the Commission’s 2026 Action Plan for the January–June period, assessing ongoing efforts related to the sustainable development and management of the Caspian Sea.
Participants also reviewed draft documents to be considered at the Caspian Environmental Summit, which is set to take place in October 2026 in the Avaza National Tourist Zone. The summit is expected to bring together regional stakeholders to discuss environmental protection and sustainable cooperation in the Caspian region.
The meeting underscored the productive cooperation between Turkmenistan and leading international organizations on Caspian Sea issues. Speakers noted that the country’s accession to several United Nations international environmental conventions reflects its commitment to fulfilling international obligations in the fields of environmental protection and sustainable development.
Officials emphasized that Turkmenistan continues to strengthen cooperation with the international community through the implementation of global environmental standards and initiatives aimed at preserving the Caspian ecosystem.
The Commission also reviewed organizational preparations for activities marking Caspian Sea Day, with discussions focusing on coordinating events to raise awareness of the sea’s environmental and economic significance.
Particular attention was given to enhancing the Commission’s work through scientific research and evidence-based policymaking. Participants also highlighted the importance of expanding collaboration with international organizations to promote environmental conservation, scientific cooperation, and sustainable development across the Caspian region.
The meeting reaffirmed Turkmenistan’s commitment to advancing regional cooperation and environmental stewardship as it prepares to host the Caspian Environmental Summit later this year.
