UAE Stresses Protection of Supply Chains, Trade and Energy Flows for Global Peace
New York, The Gulf Observer: UAE Minister of State Khalifa bin Shaheen Al Marar has underscored the importance of securing and protecting global supply chains, international trade and energy flows as a means of strengthening international peace and security.
Al Marar made the remarks during an Arria Formula meeting of the UN Security Council titled “Safe Seas, Shared Security: Protecting Freedom of Navigation in an Evolving Security Environment,” held on September 17 ahead of the General Debate of the 81st session of the UN General Assembly. The meeting was chaired by Dr. Abdullatif Rashid Al Zayani, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Bahrain.
Al Marar said recent developments had demonstrated that disruptions to the movement of goods and energy could have serious consequences for food security, including the availability of fertilizers essential for agriculture, as well as for the global economy.
He highlighted the particular impact of such disruptions on countries of the Global South, noting that the World Food Programme estimates that continued disruptions could push up to 45 million additional people into acute food insecurity.
The UAE Minister of State stressed that efforts to safeguard trade and energy supply chains should be grounded in international law, the Law of the Sea and respect for state sovereignty.
He warned that failure to protect these vital flows could undermine the rules and principles underpinning international law and established norms governing relations among states. His remarks came amid wider international concerns over maritime security and disruptions affecting major global shipping routes.
Al Marar reaffirmed the UAE’s support for initiatives aimed at easing tensions, de-escalating conflicts and promoting stability, stressing the importance of ensuring that such efforts serve the interests and well-being of people across the region.
