UN Secretary-General António Guterres Tours Hazrati Imam Complex in Tashkent
Tashkent, The Gulf Observer: During his official visit to Uzbekistan, UN Secretary-General António Guterres, at the invitation of President Shavkat Mirziyoyev, visited the Hazrati Imam Complex in Tashkent, a significant cultural and religious site in the country.
Accompanied by dignitaries, Secretary-General Guterres received a comprehensive briefing on the historical significance of the mosques and mausoleums within the complex, including insights into the Quran of Uthman housed there and its historical journey to Uzbekistan. Discussions also covered advancements in religious and educational spheres, highlighting Uzbekistan’s commitment to religious freedom and the preservation of cultural traditions.
Uzbekistan, renowned for its meticulous preservation of historical monuments and scholarly heritage, initiated the construction of the Center for Islamic Civilization in 2018 under President Mirziyoyev’s auspices. This ambitious project aims to celebrate Uzbekistan’s Islamic legacy, with ongoing construction showcasing a three-story complex featuring a distinctive dome and symmetrical architecture reminiscent of ancient Uzbek structures.
Secretary-General Guterres expressed profound admiration for the historical artifacts and monuments he encountered during his visit, underscoring their profound cultural and historical significance. He commended Uzbekistan’s efforts in promoting intercultural dialogue and preserving its rich heritage, particularly praising the initiative to establish the Center for Islamic Civilization as a testament to Uzbekistan’s cultural stewardship.
