UNHRC Unanimously Adopts Kazakhstan’s Resolution on Eliminating Domestic Violence
Geneva, The Gulf Observer: At its 57th session, the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) unanimously adopted a resolution introduced by Kazakhstan, urging the global community to take decisive action against domestic violence. The resolution, Kazakhstan’s Foreign Affairs Ministry announced, was tabled in collaboration with Central Asian nations Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan.
The resolution, marking the first time the issue of domestic violence has been addressed at the UN human rights platform, highlights the urgent need for international cooperation in combating this pervasive yet underreported form of violence. Kazakhstan’s initiative builds upon the nation’s human rights priorities and aligns with the systemic reforms of President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, particularly the landmark law passed in April 2024 that criminalizes domestic violence.
For the first time, the UN formally acknowledges domestic violence as the most widespread and least publicized form of violence. The resolution calls on all member states to implement concrete measures to prevent and eliminate domestic violence, protect victims, and ensure perpetrators are held accountable.
To sustain global efforts, the Human Rights Council has incorporated the issue of domestic violence into its 2025 work plan. A comprehensive report will be prepared, offering recommendations to address the structural causes and risk factors contributing to domestic violence.
Kazakhstan’s resolution garnered widespread international support, co-sponsored by over 60 countries, including the United States, China, and numerous nations across Europe, Asia, Africa, and Latin America.
This achievement is a significant milestone for Kazakhstan, which is nearing the end of its three-year term as a member of the UN Human Rights Council. Last year, Kazakhstan also spearheaded the adoption of the resolution “Ensuring Quality Education for Peace and Tolerance for Every Child” at the UN platform in Geneva.
