US Lawmaker Joe Wilson Voices Continued Support for Morocco on Western Sahara

New York, The Gulf Observer: US Congressman Joe Wilson has reaffirmed his support for Morocco’s sovereignty over Western Sahara, highlighting the importance of the issue in the context of regional peace, stability and prosperity.

Wilson made the remarks on September 21 following a meeting with Morocco’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccan Expatriates, Nasser Bourita, on the sidelines of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York.

Wilson, who chairs the Congressional Morocco Caucus, commended US President Donald Trump’s position regarding Morocco’s sovereignty over the territory. He said that peace, stability and prosperity in the region are closely linked to Morocco’s sovereignty over what Rabat refers to as its southern provinces.

The US congressman also expressed appreciation for King Mohammed VI’s role in promoting Morocco’s regional engagement and highlighted Washington’s view of Morocco as an important partner in advancing stability across Africa, particularly North Africa.

Wilson further praised Morocco’s progress in economic development, infrastructure and defense, while underscoring the longstanding historical ties between Morocco and the United States.

He recalled Morocco’s historic recognition of US independence and described the bilateral relationship between Rabat and Washington as longstanding and significant.

The meeting between Wilson and Bourita took place amid continued diplomatic activity surrounding the Western Sahara dispute at the United Nations. The United States and Israel had also recently reaffirmed support for Morocco’s sovereignty over the territory and for Morocco’s Autonomy Plan as a basis for resolving the dispute.

Wilson has separately expressed support for designating the Polisario Front as a terrorist organization, an issue that has also featured in recent discussions between the US lawmaker and Moroccan officials.
