US envoy to Horn of Africa holds talks with Egypt
Cairo, The Gulf Observer: US Special Envoy for the Horn of Africa, Mike Hammer, has held talks with the Egyptian government in Cairo with the aim of reaching a diplomatic solution to the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam(GERD) crisis, in a way that meets the interests of all parties and contributes to peace and stability in the region.
The US envoy is on a tour of the region, starting in Egypt and will include the UAE and Ethiopia.
The US Embassy in Cairo said the US government is providing nearly $1.3bn in humanitarian aid to the Horn of Africa, helping to alleviate hunger in areas hardest hit by the global food crisis.
The US State Department has announced that the US Special Envoy for the Horn of Africa will make a tour that will last until 1 August.
It added that Hammer will also hold consultations in Addis Ababa with the African Union (AU), under whose auspices the talks related to the GERD are taking place.
“While in Ethiopia, Hammer will have the opportunity to review progress on the delivery of humanitarian assistance, accountability for human rights violations and abuses, and efforts to advance peace talks between the Ethiopian government and the authorities in Tigray,” the US said in a press release.
