Vietnam Pledges Active Role in Advancing ASEAN's Peace, Stability, and Development

Hanoi, The Gulf Observer: Prime Minister Phạm Minh Chính affirmed Vietnam’s commitment to actively collaborate with ASEAN member states and partners to promote regional and global peace, stability, cooperation, and development, with a focus on prioritizing the people’s well-being. This assertion was made during the ASEAN Future Forum 2024, held in Hanoi on Tuesday.

Themed “Towards fast and sustainable growth of a people-centred ASEAN community,” the ASEAN Future Forum 2024 convened nearly 500 delegates, including government leaders, scholars, and ambassadors from ASEAN and its partner countries.

Prime Minister Chính underscored ASEAN’s pivotal role as a platform for dialogue and initiatives for growth. However, he acknowledged the challenges faced by the bloc, such as development disparities among its members and limited connectivity within the community, despite being the world’s fifth-largest economy.

Addressing the increasingly competitive global landscape, Prime Minister Chính emphasized the importance of addressing environmental, peace, and cooperation issues while harnessing the potential of technological advancements, which can serve as both a catalyst for progress and a source of inequality for developing nations.

Moreover, he highlighted the emerging trends of green growth and the circular economy, calling for comprehensive approaches that consider the global context to ensure enduring economic benefits.

Prime Minister Chính reiterated Vietnam’s steadfast commitment to prioritizing ASEAN in its foreign policies and national security strategies. He emphasized aligning innovation and international integration efforts with the bloc across all domains.

In realizing the ASEAN Vision 2045, Prime Minister Chính proposed strengthening unity in diversity within the bloc while upholding independence, self-reliance, and a common ASEAN stance on regional and international issues. Additionally, he stressed the importance of enhancing strategic trust among members and partners to mitigate conflicts and uphold stability and prosperity.

Furthermore, Prime Minister Chính outlined key missions, including promoting green growth and the digital economy, mobilizing resources for socio-economic growth, and reforming policies, infrastructure, and human resources for rapid and sustainable development.

The ASEAN Future Forum, initiated by the Vietnamese Prime Minister at the ASEAN Summit in Jakarta last September, serves as a platform for multi-stakeholder engagement to outline a viable long-term path for the ASEAN community. It aims to foster insightful discussions, generate policy recommendations, and support ASEAN’s institutional capacity building, with outcomes expected to inform ASEAN leaders and contribute to global deliberations at the UN Summit of the Future in September.
