Vietnam Reaffirms Support for UN’s Role in Global Governance

Vientiane, The Gulf Observer: Prime Minister Phạm Minh Chính reaffirmed Vietnam’s strong support for the United Nations’ central role in global governance during a meeting with UN Secretary-General António Guterres on the sidelines of the 44th and 45th ASEAN Summits and related meetings in Vientiane, Laos, on October 11.

PM Chính congratulated the UN on the successful conclusion of the Summit of the Future held recently in New York, praising the leadership of Secretary-General Guterres and the role of UN agencies in promoting peace, stability, and development worldwide. He also expressed appreciation for the UN’s valuable cooperation and support for Vietnam’s Đổi mới (renewal) process and socio-economic development over the past four decades.

Vietnam will continue to support multilateralism and international law, PM Chính affirmed, pledging to contribute to global efforts in promoting dialogue and cooperation. He highlighted Vietnam’s active participation in UN peacekeeping missions and called for further UN assistance in helping the country enhance its resilience against natural disasters, adapt to climate change, and achieve a successful energy transition.

In response, UN Secretary-General Guterres commended Vietnam as a model of peace and sustainable development, describing the nation as the “star of ASEAN.” He praised Vietnam’s efforts to amplify the voice and influence of developing countries on the global stage and expressed his desire to work closely with Vietnam to implement the key outcomes of the Summit of the Future.

Guterres also endorsed PM Chính’s “people-centred, inclusive” approach to addressing pressing global challenges such as climate change, natural disasters, population ageing, and resource depletion. He encouraged Vietnam to continue leading global initiatives that promote peace, stability, inclusive development, and sustainability.

Both leaders agreed to strengthen ASEAN-UN relations, emphasizing ASEAN’s pivotal role as a platform for fostering dialogue and cooperation amid the increasingly complex global and regional landscape of emerging conflicts and disputes.

On this occasion, PM Chính expressed his gratitude to the UN and its agencies for their timely assistance in helping Vietnam recover from the aftermath of Typhoon Yagi.

The Vietnamese Prime Minister extended a formal invitation to Secretary-General Guterres to visit Vietnam, which was accepted with pleasure. Guterres promised to make the trip in the near future.
