Wizz Air Sofia Marathon Gains World Athletics Label, Strengthening Bulgaria’s Global Sporting Profile
Sofia, The Gulf Observer: The Wizz Air Sofia Marathon has once again received international recognition after the World Athletics Organization officially confirmed its status as part of the World Athletics Label Road Races. This acknowledgment places the event among the most prestigious road races worldwide, affirming Sofia’s reputation as a major sporting destination and highlighting the professionalism of its organization.
The 2025 edition will be held on October 11–12, marking the 42nd consecutive year of the marathon. Over the decades, the Sofia Marathon has evolved into the largest sporting event in Bulgaria’s capital, attracting elite international athletes alongside thousands of amateur runners from across the globe.
Chief organizer Anatoli Iliev from the Association Sport in Leisure described the achievement as “an important recognition for Sofia as host city of the capital’s biggest sporting event, as well as proof of the quality of the organization.”
The marathon’s new sports director, Militsa Mircheva, one of Bulgaria’s leading athletes, shared her vision of expanding the race’s international profile. “This achievement is expected to attract an increasing number of runners from all over the world,” she said, expressing confidence in the event’s growing appeal.
