262 Barangays Conferred with Seal of Good Local Governance in National Recognition Ceremony

Pasay City, The Gulf Observer: The Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) has officially conferred the Seal of Good Local Governance for Barangay (SGLGB) to 262 barangays during the opening cluster of the Liga ng mga Barangay National Congress, held at the World Trade Center in Pasay City.
In a statement issued on Saturday, the DILG highlighted that this recognition affirms the vital role of barangays in realizing the vision of a Bagong Pilipinas as championed by President Ferdinand R. Marcos, Jr. The award underscores the excellence of these local communities in governance and their steadfast commitment to accountability, transparency, and responsive public service.
The 262 awardees comprise the first batch of national recipients under the 2024 SGLGB assessment cycle. The remaining barangays among the 3,283 national passers will be honored in subsequent ceremonies scheduled for July 29, August 19, September 10, and October 21.
Interior Secretary Jonvic Remulla has announced that a restructuring of the SGLGB system will be implemented starting in 2025. The reforms aim to align the program with a unified, strategic, and outcome-based performance evaluation system that will apply across all levels of local government. This move is part of the department’s broader initiative to encourage local government units (LGUs) not only to meet compliance standards but to pursue genuine transformation.
A total of 3,283 barangays—accounting for nearly 8 percent of the country’s 41,610 barangays—successfully passed the 2024 SGLGB evaluation. The assessment was based on DILG’s “3+1 principle,” which requires excellence in the three core areas of governance: financial administration and sustainability, disaster preparedness, and peace and order, along with performance in at least one of the essential areas: social protection and sensitivity, business-friendliness and competitiveness, or environmental management.
Among this year’s awardees, 663 barangays achieved the distinction for the second consecutive year, while 2,620 barangays earned the seal for the first time.
The SGLGB program serves as a catalyst for improved grassroots governance by encouraging barangays to enhance their service delivery standards. Through such efforts, the DILG aims to build resilient, ethical, and service-oriented communities that contribute meaningfully to national development.
