Turkmenistan's Foreign Minister Meets UN Secretary-General António Guterres

New York, The Gulf Observer: Deputy Chairman of the Cabinet of Ministers and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan, Rashid Meredov, held a significant meeting with UN Secretary-General António Guterres, focusing on strengthening the cooperation between Turkmenistan and the United Nations.

During the meeting, both sides engaged in comprehensive discussions on enhancing the strategic partnership. Secretary-General Guterres commended Turkmenistan’s longstanding policy of permanent neutrality, emphasizing the country’s vital role in promoting peace and stability within the Central Asian region. He highlighted how Turkmenistan’s foreign policy aligns with the UN’s objectives in maintaining regional security.

In response, Foreign Minister Meredov reaffirmed Turkmenistan’s unwavering commitment to its neutrality-based foreign policy. He also expressed the nation’s readiness to work closely with the United Nations in implementing the Global Security Strategy initiative, which was proposed by Turkmenistan’s President at the previous General Assembly session. This initiative underscores Turkmenistan’s dedication to addressing global security challenges.

Moreover, Meredov outlined the steps being taken to implement the agreements forged during this high-level dialogue, noting that detailed plans are in development. The discussions also placed special focus on the year 2025, which has been declared by the UN as the “International Year of Peace and Trust,” an initiative spearheaded by Turkmenistan. This declaration reflects the country’s leadership in promoting peacebuilding and international cooperation.

On the sidelines of the UN General Assembly, the Turkmen delegation also participated in a C5+1 meeting on September 27, 2024, alongside the foreign ministers of Central Asian countries and the United States. The meeting aimed to strengthen regional cooperation and discuss pressing security and economic issues impacting Central Asia and beyond.

This series of high-level meetings underscores Turkmenistan’s active role in the international arena, reinforcing its commitment to global peace, stability, and multilateral cooperation.
