President Ilham Aliyev Receives UK Minister for Climate to Discuss COP29 Preparations
Baku, The Gulf Observer: President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev received Kerry McCarthy, Minister for Climate in the Department of Energy Security and Net Zero of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. The meeting underscored the growing cooperation between Azerbaijan and the United Kingdom in the lead-up to COP29, which Azerbaijan is set to host next year.
President Aliyev highlighted Azerbaijan’s high-level preparations for COP29, despite having less than a year to organize the global event. He emphasized Azerbaijan’s active role in fostering international cooperation and dialogue, noting the country’s successful leadership of the Non-Aligned Movement and its longstanding collaboration with various international organizations. “These achievements provide a solid foundation for the effective organization of COP29,” said the President.
Both sides expressed satisfaction with the ongoing collaboration between their respective COP teams, reaffirming their commitment to addressing climate change, which remains a top priority on the UK’s agenda.
Discussions during the meeting focused on strengthening cooperation between Azerbaijan and the United Kingdom in the renewable energy sector. President Aliyev outlined Azerbaijan’s initiatives in this field, including its participation in a four-party project with Georgia, Romania, and Hungary to construct an undersea energy cable across the Black Sea. He also highlighted Azerbaijan’s growing renewable energy potential and efforts to connect Central Asia with the country through renewable energy projects.
The significance of the pre-COP event recently held in Baku was also emphasized, particularly its role in shaping the agenda for COP29. Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to advancing the global fight against climate change through continued collaboration.
The meeting marked another step in the deepening partnership between Azerbaijan and the United Kingdom as both nations look to lead by example in the transition to renewable energy and the global effort to combat climate change.
