His Majesty Sultan of Brunei Emphasises Preservation of Traditional Values Amid Globalisation

Berakas, The Gulf Observer: His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam, has underscored the critical importance of preserving traditional values and social customs in the face of rapid modernisation and globalisation.
Delivering a titah during the Hari Raya Aidilfitri celebration hosted by Yayasan Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah at the International Convention Centre in Berakas, His Majesty cautioned that while contemporary lifestyles and attitudes continue to evolve, Brunei must remain firm in safeguarding the time-honoured values passed down through generations.
“These traditions must not be allowed to disappear in the face of modern currents,” His Majesty declared.
He stressed that mutual respect, love, tolerance, and cooperation are among the core values that must be preserved and never allowed to erode, even as the nation adapts to global trends and socio-economic changes.
Community Leadership and Practical Approaches
Acknowledging the dynamic influence of globalisation on society and the economy, His Majesty called upon community leaders at all levels to adopt practical and timely approaches that align with contemporary developments while remaining rooted in local culture and ethics.
“Our approaches must be practical and suited to current trends,” said His Majesty, expressing hope that these initiatives would be further strengthened through organised and impactful programmes aligned with Brunei Vision 2035.
A Celebration of Unity and Faith
Expressing gratitude to Allah the Almighty for the blessings that enabled Muslims across Brunei to celebrate Hari Raya Aidilfitri with joy, His Majesty reminded citizens to ensure that celebrations are conducted in accordance with Islamic teachings. The monarch emphasised the importance of using the occasion to foster unity and strengthen bonds of silaturrahim—beginning with family and extending to neighbours, friends, and the broader community.
Highlighting the example set by Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), His Majesty shared how the Prophet would walk to the mosque for the Sunnat Aidilfitri prayer and return by a different route, allowing for more community engagement and reinforcing social ties.
Embracing the Theme of Unity
His Majesty also welcomed this year’s Hari Raya theme, “Community Unity in Achieving National Aspirations,” praising it as timely and aligned with Brunei’s vision for peace, harmony, and sustainable development.
He further acknowledged the contributions of various community groups, expressing sincere appreciation for their roles in promoting social cohesion and national progress.
“Their efforts and initiatives in empowering the community are deeply appreciated,” His Majesty concluded.
The celebration marked not only a joyous religious occasion but also a reaffirmation of Brunei’s collective commitment to unity, cultural preservation, and national advancement.
