Malaysia Regards Italy as Key Strategic Partner in Europe, Says Anwar Ibrahim

Rome, The Gulf Observer: Prime Minister of Malaysia, Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, emphasized that the prevailing peace and stability in Malaysia and the broader ASEAN region have laid a solid foundation for economic growth and the flourishing of the private sector. Speaking to the Malaysian diaspora in Italy at a dinner engagement shortly after his arrival, Anwar underlined the importance of maintaining regional harmony for sustained prosperity.
“Malaysia, as ASEAN Chair, has consistently pursued the resolution of contentious issues, knowing that a stable and united regional bloc is essential to unlocking economic potential,” he said.
He also encouraged Malaysians abroad to continue building their skills and expertise, referring to them as “ambassadors of the nation.”
“The Malaysian diaspora is an important asset as they serve as envoys representing the country globally. I urge you to seize opportunities to develop your talents so that you may contribute meaningfully upon returning home,” the Prime Minister stated.
Anwar arrived in Rome on July 1 for a three-day official visit at the invitation of Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni. Accompanied by a high-level delegation that includes Foreign Affairs Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan, Transport Minister Anthony Loke, Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Tengku Abdul Aziz, and prominent corporate figures, the visit aims to enhance bilateral ties between Malaysia and Italy.
Upon landing, Anwar was welcomed by Mohamad Hasan, Malaysian Ambassador to Italy Datuk Zahid Rastam, and senior officials.
The Prime Minister affirmed Malaysia’s commitment to deepening cooperation with Italy, particularly in trade, investment, and defence, describing Italy as a vital strategic partner in Europe. He also expressed hope that the visit would help bridge Europe and Southeast Asia amid evolving geopolitical dynamics.
Foreign Minister Mohamad Hasan praised Malaysia’s positive global image, noting that the country’s principled stance and neutrality have drawn international attention and engagement.
“Malaysia’s neutrality is a strength. We engage with all parties, which enhances our diplomatic credibility,” he said.
Transport Minister Anthony Loke also pointed to Malaysia’s rising international profile as a positive trend ahead of Visit Malaysia Year 2026. He indicated that increased visibility would translate into better connectivity and robust tourism growth, adding that key transportation infrastructure projects were progressing effectively.
Meanwhile, Minister Zafrul highlighted that the Malaysian economy remains resilient despite global uncertainties.
“Foreign direct investments continue to flow into Malaysia, and this is a testament to the confidence investors have in our country. I thank the business community for playing a crucial role in this progress,” he said.
Following the Italy leg, the Prime Minister and his delegation are scheduled to visit Paris and Rio de Janeiro as part of broader efforts to strengthen Malaysia’s international economic and diplomatic engagements.
