Istaravshan Showcases Rich Cultural Heritage at Cultural Day Celebrations in Dushanbe

Dushanbe, The Gulf Observer: The Culture Day of the ancient city of Istaravshan was celebrated with great enthusiasm at Iram Park in Dushanbe on Sunday, highlighting the city’s rich cultural heritage, traditional craftsmanship, agricultural products, national cuisine, and vibrant artistic performances.
The event featured exhibitions of agricultural and industrial products, traditional handicrafts, national dishes, and a colourful cultural and literary programme presented by local artists and performers.
Speaking at the opening ceremony, officials emphasized that Dushanbe serves not only as the political and administrative capital of Tajikistan but also as an important centre for strengthening national unity, preserving cultural heritage, and promoting closer ties among the country’s regions. The capital provides residents and visitors with an opportunity to experience the traditions, culture, and achievements of different parts of Tajikistan.
The speakers noted that organising regional cultural days plays a significant role in strengthening the country’s unified cultural space, promoting folk creativity, and preserving the historical traditions of the Tajik people.
Visitors to the exhibition were introduced to a wide range of handmade crafts, agricultural products, national cuisine, and decorative and applied arts produced by artisans from Istaravshan, reflecting the city’s rich cultural identity.
A cultural concert also showcased Istaravshan’s musical and folkloric heritage through traditional songs and literary performances, highlighting the region’s centuries-old customs and artistic traditions.
Known for its thousands of years of history, Istaravshan is regarded as one of Tajikistan’s foremost centres of traditional craftsmanship and cultural identity. Often described as a living museum of folk arts, the city continues to preserve and promote crafts that have been passed down through generations.
Istaravshan is renowned for traditional crafts including jewellery making, blacksmithing, knife making, embroidery, wood carving, pottery, carpet weaving, and comb carving. Many of the city’s streets and villages bear names linked to these historic professions, reflecting its longstanding artisanal heritage.
The event also promoted Istaravshan’s tourism potential. Officials highlighted that, under a decision issued by the city’s mayor on May 6, 2024, dedicated workspaces were allocated to 49 artisans within the historic Mug Fortress Memorial Complex, where they display and sell their handmade products in specially designed market stalls.
Organisers also recalled that Istaravshan recently hosted the Ozar International Handicrafts Festival, during which the city was officially awarded the “World Craft City” certificate in recognition of its outstanding contribution to preserving and promoting traditional craftsmanship, further enhancing its international reputation as a global centre of artisanal excellence.
