Jokowi leaves for US after Extraordinary Summit in Riyadh

Jakarta, The Gulf Observer: President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) left for the United States on Sunday after attending the Joint Arab Islamic Extraordinary Summit in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

A statement released by the Presidential Secretariat explained that President Jokowi and his entourage departed from King Khalid International Airport at around 9:40 a.m. local time.

President Jokowi’s departure was witnessed by Riyadh Deputy Governor Amir Mohammad bin Abdurrahman, Indonesian Ambassador to Saudi Arabia Abdul Aziz Ahmad, Saudi Arabian Ambassador to Indonesia Faisal bin Abdullah Al-Amudi, and Defense Attaché of the Indonesian Embassy in Riyadh Putut Witjaksono.

Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi released a press statement in Riyadh on Saturday (November 11) saying that the extraordinary summit that leaders of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) and Arab League’s member states attended was key to show the solidity of members of the two organisations and to find additional joint efforts in halting Israeli attacks against the Palestinian people.

“In his national statement, Mr. President said that the OIC must be united and at the forefront for the resolution of the Gaza situation,” she stated.

According to her, the extraordinary summit produced resolutions containing 31 decisions with very strong messages on the humanitarian situation in Palestine.

The resolution also shows the OIC and Arab League’s position on Gaza’s concerning situation, she added.

Some of the decisions include condemning the Israeli aggression in Gaza, urging the UN Security Council to produce resolutions so that attacks can be ceased soon, aid can come in, and the importance of complying with international law.

She noted that paragraph 11 of the resolution assigned the foreign ministers of Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Egypt, Qatar, Turkey, Indonesia, Nigeria, and Palestine to initiate immediate international action to formulate an international move to halt the war in Gaza.

On behalf of all member countries of the OIC and Arab League, the foreign ministries of those countries were also assigned to pressure for a real and serious political process to achieve permanent and comprehensive peace in accordance with established international references.

Meanwhile, among others, Minister Marsudi and Trade Minister Zulkifli Hasan are accompanying President Jokowi on his working visit to the US.
