Kuala Lumpur, The Gulf Observer: ASEAN continues to stand as a unified and resilient region, facing global challenges with unwavering commitment and a clear stance on fair and peaceful negotiations. Malaysian Prime Minister, speaking as the current ASEAN Chair, reaffirmed the collective strength of the region amidst rising global uncertainties, particularly with the looming threat of US trade protectionism.

“Our commitment to ASEAN cooperation never wavers,” the Prime Minister said in his address. “The regional collective spirit is the main source of strength, and it must be used aggressively to protect the interests of all ASEAN nations.”

The Prime Minister highlighted that the ASEAN economy remains stable, in contrast to the turbulence faced by global markets. Despite challenges such as the rising US trade protection policies, he assured that ASEAN will not be divided. “We choose the path of fair, peaceful, and equal negotiation, not conflict,” he emphasized. Malaysia will not rush to impose retaliatory measures that could harm all parties involved, he stated, stressing the region’s preference for constructive dialogue over confrontation.

As Chairman of ASEAN, the Prime Minister has consulted with other regional leaders to ensure a unified and concise response to external economic pressures. The region, he noted, is far better equipped to handle these challenges than it was during the Asian financial crisis of 1997-98. At that time, ASEAN economies were fragile, but now, the region’s economic foundation is much stronger due to closer cooperation and prudent fiscal and financial policies.

The Prime Minister concluded with a message of reassurance to global investors: “ASEAN remains open and investor-friendly, and we are prepared to face whatever global challenges lie ahead.”

This statement underscores ASEAN’s continued commitment to strengthening economic ties, fostering fair trade, and maintaining stability in a rapidly changing global landscape.
