TAQA and EWEC Announce Major Energy Projects to Support UAE’s AI Strategy and Net Zero Goals

Abu Dhabi, The Gulf Observer: Abu Dhabi National Energy Company (TAQA) and Emirates Water and Electricity Company (EWEC) have unveiled new energy infrastructure projects aimed at advancing the UAE National Strategy for Artificial Intelligence 2031 and the UAE Net Zero by 2050 initiative.
As part of this transformative collaboration, TAQA has signed a 24-year Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with EWEC to develop, own, and operate the 1-gigawatt (GW) Al Dhafra Open-Cycle Gas Turbine (OCGT) project. TAQA will maintain 100 percent ownership of the project and oversee its operation and maintenance. Additionally, TAQA Transmission will develop advanced power grid infrastructure to support the integration of new energy generation capacity, ensuring reliable and low-carbon power access.
The initiative aligns with EWEC and Masdar’s groundbreaking project, which will enable renewable energy to be available 24/7, reinforcing the UAE’s leadership in renewable energy and low-carbon infrastructure. The project, set to deliver 1GW of baseload power daily from renewable sources, will feature the world’s largest combined solar and battery energy storage system (BESS).
The collaboration will drive AED 36 billion in energy infrastructure investments in Abu Dhabi, with 75 percent allocated to renewable and conventional power generation, while 25 percent will enhance the power grid.
Jasim Thabet, Group CEO and Managing Director of TAQA and Vice Chairman of Masdar, emphasized the project’s role in advancing clean energy solutions in the UAE, stating,
“As a champion of low-carbon power and water, we are proud to be part of these world-class projects alongside EWEC, ensuring reliable low-carbon power at all times.”
Ahmed Ali Alshamsi, CEO of EWEC, highlighted the strategic importance of the initiative, saying,
“This partnership will not only power the UAE’s AI ambitions but also accelerate the nation’s energy transition, setting a global benchmark for sustainable energy systems.”
As the UAE transitions into an AI-driven future, these projects will lay the foundation for integrating next-generation renewable energy technologies and advanced transmission solutions, contributing to the country’s long-term environmental and economic sustainability.
