BMKG reports 6.4-Magnitude earthquake detected in Papua
Jakarta, The Gulf Observer: On Sunday at 12:16 a.m. Western Indonesia Time, the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) reported the detection of a 6.4-magnitude earthquake in the Sarmi area, northern Papua. The seismic event was attributed to a shallow thrust fault in the Anjak Mamberamo zone, occurring at a depth of 50 kilometers.
Daryono, the Head of the Earthquake and Tsunami Center at BMKG, clarified that the earthquake initially registered as a 6.5 magnitude in the northeastern area of Kobagma, Papua Pegunungan, but was later updated to a magnitude of 6.4 in the Bonggo area, Sarmi District, Papua.
The epicenter was pinpointed at 2.96 south latitude and 139.42 east longitude, precisely located on land one kilometer south of Bonggo, Sarmi, Papua. The impact extended to the Jayapura District area with an intensity scale of III-IV MMI, indicating that, if the earthquake had occurred during the day, it would have been perceptible to a significant number of people in their homes.
